Lizard telepathy, fox telepathy, by Yoshinori Henguchi and translated by David Michael Ramirez II, has the delight of a title that refuses human centrality. Lizards and foxes bring different mythic and creaturely energies: cold skin, quick movement, cunning, omen, transformation. Telepathy adds the fantasy of communication beyond language, which is a wonderful subject for translation itself. I would read this Japanese collection for its weirdness, play, and animal intelligence. The title suggests that the poems may be listening for signals outside ordinary speech, asking what else the world is saying when humans stop monopolizing meaning. Some poetry teaches us to interpret. Better poetry sometimes teaches us to become less certain that human language is the only language in the room.
