What is Other People’s Poems?
At its core, Other People’s Poems (OPP) is a poetry reading series here in Seattle (and maybe New Jersey?). The evenings typically run from 7-9pm on Saturdays, roughly every 5-6 weeks, aiming for 9 total readings each year. The evening is bifurcated with an open mic followed by a selected reading with three featured readers. Sign-ups for the poetry open mic happen at the event, we typically put a cap on total sign-ups to ten (10) readers, and recommend you choose a poem with an upper length of 3-5 minutes. Featured readers currently are invited by co-hosts Ally Ang and myself and largely found through community outreach.
What differentiates OPP from other poetry readings is that, well, you’ll be reading other people’s poems – poems you did not write. You could read poems written by friends, mentors, literary heroes or enemies, or each other if you desire. The goal is for the audience to get a better sense of who you consider yourself to be writing in lineage/conversation with, what has been tantalizing your mind lately, the poems that are drawing you to them whether you’ve analyzed the why yet or not.
But just as much as this is for an audience of eager poetry readers, much of the spark of this series is also to build poetry community between writers and readers alike! We encourage all who attend to chat about who you’re reading! There have been book clubs, friendships, and more formed out of Other People’s Poems and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
The series emphasizes:
- Careful curation
- Respect for the audience
- Respect for the work
- A welcoming atmosphere for readers and listeners alike
Poets featured may include Seattle-based writers, poets from elsewhere in the United States, and international poets whose work appears in English translation. Events are designed to be accessible to people who may be attending a poetry reading for the first time, as well as longtime readers of poetry.
What Is a Poetry Reading?
A poetry reading is a live literary event where poets read their work aloud to an audience. Some poetry readings feature a single poet. Others include multiple readers, a curated lineup, or a themed program. Readings may be held in bookstores, libraries, galleries, community spaces, cafés, or dedicated performance venues.
Or, if you’re more inventive, as poetry is want to be, you could hold a poetry reading quite literally anywhere by reading your poetry aloud. Some poetry readings invite performance or hybrid iterations of arts like painting, music, drama, and more. The point of a poetry reading, in my experience, is not to simply show off that you read poetry, but rather to engage in the non-consumer creative experience, to loosen inhibitions toward the boundaries of perceived normalities and instead bask in the radiating dance of language.
Many readers attend poetry readings not only to hear poems, but to participate in a shared cultural moment centered on language, attention, and listening.
Seattle poetry readings often include time for conversation, book signings, or informal discussion after the event. Doubly, a reminder that many authors are in fact regular people who love to go out after a reading for a simple beer or a mocktail. If you’re truly interested in the community of poetry and understand the nuance between friend and fan then please don’t be shy and try to speak with others at these events.
Poetry Readings in Seattle
Seattle has one of the most active poetry scenes in the Pacific Northwest. Poetry readings in Seattle take place year-round and reflect a wide range of styles, languages, and traditions; though, I will note that Seattle tends to have a lower-attendance during the Summers, as we must soak in the sun while we have it, and a rainy Winter day may impact the capacity for folks to want to leave their houses.
You can find:
- Contemporary poetry readings
- International and translated poetry readings
- Local Seattle poets reading new work
- Established writers touring nationally and internationally
- Themed readings focused on history, identity, or craft
- Hybrid events including art, performance, music, and more
Many poetry readings in Seattle are free or low-cost and open to the public like Speak Out Seattle, UNPOETRY, and Hugo House readings. Some like the Seattle Arts and Lecture series or Town Hall Seattle require registration due to limited seating.
Where Poetry Readings Take Place in Seattle
Below you can find a smattering of links to event registries for various readings and events I can personally attest to. If you are a Seattle reading series and are insulted by not being on this list, I apologize – I am a singular Cody with a lovely wife and two fantastic cats, so I do not get out much.
Who Should Attend a Poetry Reading?
Poetry readings are open to anyone interested in language and literature. You do not need to be a poet to attend. Many people come to poetry readings because they enjoy listening, learning, and experiencing writing aloud.
A poetry reading is a good fit if you are:
- Curious about poetry but unsure where to start
- Looking for literary events in Seattle
- Interested in hearing writers read their own work
- Seeking a quiet, thoughtful cultural event
- Interested in international or translated literature
I doubly encourage you to come out to an OPP if you’ve always wanted to enjoy poetry but just don’t get it.
