White piano
Nicole Brossard
Translated from French by Erin Mouré
White piano, translated from the French by Erín Mouré, Robert Majzels, brings Nicole Brossard's French-language work into English through Coach House Books. Published in 2013, it is best approached as a book of encounter rather than as a book to solve. Brossard’s title makes music feel visual and spatial, a white instrument set in the room of language, gender, and thought. The pleasure of a book like this is the permission it gives to move slowly. A reader does not have to master every reference to feel the work at hand. Sometimes the task is simply to notice how a sentence leans, how an image opens, how a voice from Canada changes the room around English.
