When the Pipirite Sings
Jean Métellus
Translated from French by Haun Saussy
When the Pipirite Sings, by Jean Métellus and translated by Haun Saussy from French, brings Haiti French-language poetry into English through Haitian landscape, birdsong, and the signal of a local morning becoming lyric. The metadata gives the reader a doorway, but the real value is what happens once the poem starts making its own weather. I would read it for pipirite, song, dawn, and the way place can enter a poem through sound before explanation, not as a fixed lesson about a country or period. The best entry point is still the poem itself: the line that catches, the image that refuses to explain itself, the feeling that arrives before paraphrase. When the Pipirite Sings belongs in the translated poetry library because it gives Haitian French-language poetry a musical, place-rooted entrance.
