The Kindly Interrogator
Alireza Abiz
Translated from Persian by Alireza Abiz
The Kindly Interrogator by Alireza Abiz, translated from Persian by W.N. Herbert & Alireza Abiz and published by Shearsman Books, is a book rooted in Iran. Abiz’s The Kindly Interrogator, translated by W.N. Herbert and Alireza Abiz, has a title that is almost too perfectly unsettling. Kindness and interrogation do not cancel each other out. They produce the book’s likely pressure: authority with a soft voice, speech under scrutiny, tenderness that may or may not be trusted. As contemporary Persian poetry, the collection seems to live in that charged zone where private language is never entirely private. I would read it for irony, unease, and verbal precision.
