the easiness and the loneliness
Asta Olivia Nordenhof
Translated from Danish by Susanna Nied
the easiness and the loneliness, by Asta Olivia Nordenhof, is a Danish poetry collection from Denmark, translated from Danish by Susanna Nied, published by Open Letter in 2018. It is a Danish collection by Asta Olivia Nordenhof, translated by Susanna Nied, that pairs plain feeling with social and psychic exposure. The lowercase title has a vulnerable flatness to it, as though the poems were refusing decoration in order to stay painfully near. I would not approach it as a book that needs to be solved before it can begin working. Start with the title, the pressure of the translated line, and the feeling of a voice making room for itself in English. The value here is not just metadata or representation. It is the chance to let a particular book create its own weather, its own difficulty, and its own way of asking the reader to listen.
