It is comic, elegiac, absurd, folkloric, and faintly grotesque at once. Andrukhovych is a major contemporary Ukrainian writer, and this book suggests a lyric mode willing to mix song with mockery, mourning with performance. The reader should not expect solemnity to behave itself. That is part of the point. Poetry can grieve and laugh in the same breath, especially when history has made straightforward speech inadequate.
