On Foot I Wandered Through the Solar Systems, Edith Södergran’s Swedish-language work translated by Malena Mörling, gives the reader one of those rare lyric entrances where the self seems to walk beyond its own body. Södergran is a poet of inward extremity, but not in a way that feels sealed off. Her poems tend to make solitude cosmic, turning illness, desire, womanhood, and perception into a weather system large enough to cross. I would not introduce this book as historical modernism first, even though that frame matters. Start with the feeling that a single voice is trying to stand under the impossible size of existence and speak anyway. Mörling’s translation keeps that astonishment available in English.
