Locomotrix
Amelia Rosselli
Translated from Italian by Jennifer Scappettone
Locomotrix, by Amelia Rosselli and translated by Jennifer Scappettone, belongs to the high-voltage zone of Italian modernism where language, displacement, music, and psyche collide. Rosselli is one of the great difficult poets of the twentieth century, a writer whose multilingual life and formal experimentation make the poem feel like an unstable instrument. The title is all motion and machinery, but also feminine force: something that moves, drives, pulls, perhaps derails. Scappettone’s translation is important because Rosselli requires more than accuracy; she requires a translator able to hear fracture as music. I would read Locomotrix for its velocity and disturbance. The poems do not simply travel. They jolt, stutter, accelerate, and leave the reader changed by the noise.
