Layli and Majnun
Qays ibn al-Mulawwah
Layli and Majnun, by Qays ibn al-Mulawwah and translated by various translators from Persian, brings Persian-language poetry into English through Persian love legend, Layli and Majnun, and the mythic machinery of longing pushed past reason. The metadata gives the reader a doorway, but the real value is what happens once the poem starts making its own weather. I would read it for Layli, Majnun, madness, and the ancient story of desire becoming a whole weather system, not as a fixed lesson about Unknown. The best entry point is still the poem itself: the line that catches, the image that refuses to explain itself, the feeling that arrives before paraphrase. Layli and Majnun belongs in the translated poetry library because it gives the library a Persian-rooted doorway into one of the great transregional love legends.
