In a Time of Burning
Ceran
Translated from Tamil by Lakshmi Holmstrom
Cheran’s In a Time of Burning, translated from Tamil by Lakshmi Holmstrom, should be read with attention to fire as both historical condition and inward weather. Tamil poetry in translation often carries the weight of displacement, political violence, language struggle, and memory, but a book like this should not be reduced to context alone. The poems matter because they let a reader feel how a life continues in the middle of burning, how ordinary human attention survives inside catastrophe. Holmstrom’s translation gives English-language readers access to a voice shaped by witness and lyric restraint. For the library, this entry is important because it keeps Tamil poetry present as a living literature of grief, endurance, and exact feeling.
