Elsewhere
Anthology
Translated by Eliot Weinberger
Elsewhere is an anthology of Various poetry, translated by Eliot Weinberger, published by Open Letter in 2013. It is an anthology of world poetry shaped by Eliot Weinberger's restless attention to voices outside the usual Anglophone frame. As an anthology, it makes elsewhere feel less like distance than encounter, a way of asking what English-language readers have not been trained to hear. I would not approach it as a book that needs to be solved before it can be felt. Start with the pressure of the title, the texture of the translated line, and the feeling of a voice making room for itself in English. For this library, the book matters as more than a record of Various; it is an invitation to let poetry remain particular, difficult, and alive without asking it to behave like explanation.
