Earth Absolute and Other Texts
Lorand Gaspar, Mary Ann Caws
Translated from French by Nancy Kline
Earth Absolute and Other Texts, by Lorand Gaspar, Mary Ann Caws and translated by Nancy Kline from French, brings Romania French-language poetry into English through absolute earth, philosophical texture, and the elemental scale of Gaspar's writing. The metadata gives the reader a doorway, but the real value is what happens once the poem starts making its own weather. I would read it for earth, text, body, and the attempt to think through matter without leaving lyric behind, not as a fixed lesson about a country or period. The best entry point is still the poem itself: the line that catches, the image that refuses to explain itself, the feeling that arrives before paraphrase. Earth Absolute and Other Texts belongs in the translated poetry library because it belongs as a Franco-Romanian work of meditative, elemental inquiry.
