Autobiography of a Goddess
Andal Andal, Ravi Shankar
Translated from Tamil by Priya Sarukkai Chabria
Autobiography of a Goddess, associated here with Andal and Ravi Shankar and translated by Priya Sarukkai Chabria, belongs to the shelf as a Tamil devotional and literary encounter rather than a straightforward contemporary collection. The title is already magnificent: it asks the reader to imagine divinity speaking not as doctrine, but as lyric life. Poems connected to Andal carry love, devotion, erotic charge, and sacred address in ways that make any simple division between religious and bodily feeling feel insufficient. A good reader does not need to solve that tension. The tension is the point. This book offers English-language readers a way into Tamil literary inheritance where song, worship, desire, and myth continue to speak through each other.
