Another Birth
Forugh Farrokhzad
Translated from Persian by Hasan Javadi & Susan Sallee
Another Birth by Forugh Farrokhzad, translated from Persian by Hasan Javadi & Susan Sallee and published by Mage Publishers, is a selected volume rooted in Iran. Farrokhzad’s Another Birth, translated by Hasan Javadi and Susan Sallee, remains one of the essential entrances into modern Persian poetry. The title is not subtle, and it does not need to be. Birth here feels artistic, erotic, intellectual, and existential, a remaking of the self against inherited limits. I would read Farrokhzad for the courage of directness, for the way desire and selfhood become inseparable from poetic form, and for the continuing force of a voice that still feels newly arrived.
