The title is wonderfully dry: an economic phrase that becomes lyric pressure. What has already been paid? What kind of debt does a poem create before we know what it is asking from us? I like poetry that can make thought feel dramatic without announcing itself as dramatic, and this book sits in that zone. It is philosophical without becoming airless, restrained without being cold.
