A Roll of the Dice
Stephane Mallarme
Translated from French by Jeff Clark
Stéphane Mallarmé’s A Roll of the Dice, translated by Robert Bononno and Jeff Clark, is one of the defining experiments of modern poetry. The title is already a theory of chance, form, and cosmic risk, and the poem’s famous spatial arrangement makes the page itself part of the event. This is not a work to approach as though it will unfold in ordinary sentences. It asks the eye to read, the mind to drift, and the page to become a field of probability. Bononno and Clark’s edition must contend not only with French meaning, but with typography, silence, and visual motion. I would read this as a foundational text for anyone interested in what happens when poetry breaks the line so thoroughly that white space becomes fate.
